Before the Team Arrives
Weather matters for roof coatings, and it is something we factor in when scheduling jobs. Most coating systems require dry conditions during application and for a period afterwards to cure correctly. We keep an eye on the forecast in the days leading up to a job, and if conditions look unsuitable, we will communicate with you in advance rather than turn up, look at the sky, and go home again.
Most homeowners do not need to do a great deal to prepare. Ensuring clear access to the roof and moving anything fragile or valuable away from the area below the roof edge is sensible. You do not need to vacate the property, and in most cases the job creates very little disruption to daily life inside the house.
Stage One: Inspection and Assessment
The first thing the team does on arrival is inspect the roof in detail. Even when a survey has already been carried out, the installation day inspection is an important step. Conditions can change, and it gives us the opportunity to identify anything that wasn’t apparent during the initial visit.
We’re checking the condition of the surface, looking for areas that need repair before coating, assessing drainage points and outlets, and confirming that the substrate is in the condition we expect. Any repairs, crack filling, resealing of joints, or spot treatment of problem areas happen at this stage before anything else begins.
Stage Two: Cleaning and Preparation
This is the stage that has the greatest influence on how long the finished coating performs. A coating applied over moss, algae, loose material, or contamination will not bond correctly, and the results will reflect that within a relatively short time.
Pressure washing removes the bulk of the debris, moss, and surface contamination. Biocide treatment follows, killing any remaining biological growth and preventing regrowth for a period after the job is complete. Particularly stubborn areas may need mechanical cleaning as well. The roof needs to be allowed to dry adequately before the next stage begins, which is why weather conditions matter so much.

Stage Three: Priming
Most coating systems perform significantly better when a primer coat is applied before the main coating. The primer penetrates the substrate, improves adhesion, and ensures the coating bonds evenly across the entire surface. Some roof types and some coating products require specific primers, which is another reason why using a contractor who knows the products they’re working with matters.
Primer application is relatively quick. Curing time before the coating can go on varies by product, typically ranging from thirty minutes to a few hours depending on temperature and humidity.
Stage Four: Coating Application
The coating goes on in one or two passes depending on the product specification and the condition of the roof. Each pass needs to be applied at the correct thickness, which is why professional application produces better results than DIY. Too thin and the protective properties are compromised. Uneven application creates weak spots that can fail early.
Special attention goes to edges, upstands, pipe penetrations, and drainage outlets. These are the areas where the roof is most vulnerable, and ensuring the coating is continuous and properly sealed at every junction is critical.
Stage Five: Curing and Final Inspection
Most coatings are touch-dry within a few hours of application. Full cure, where the coating reaches its maximum performance properties, typically takes twenty-four to forty-eight hours depending on the product and weather conditions.
Before the team leaves, a final inspection confirms that the coating has been applied correctly, that coverage is consistent, and that all vulnerable areas have been properly treated.
